Ragnar admired the shield maiden, Lagertha, from afar for many months before he won her hand in marriage.
Ragnar and Lagertha had one son, Fridleif, and two daughters who's names are not recorded.
When returning from a civil war, Ragnar divorced Lagertha, because she set beasts against him, to marry Thora.

The king of Sweden, Fro, invaded Norway and killed the Norwegian king. Fro put the women of the king's family into a brothel. Ragnar heard and came with an army to avenge his grandfather, the Norwegian king. The women Fro had abused dressed as men and fought with Ragnar. The chief woman was Lagertha and was a key to Ragnar's victory.

Ragnar was persuaded to marry Eysteinn's daughter instead of Aslaug. Aslaug found out and proved she was the daughter of Sigurd by giving him the son Sigurd whose eye bear the image of a serpent which changed Ragnar's mind.

Ragnar was attracted to Lagertha because of her courage.
Ragnar had to fight for her hand in marriage, he killed a bear and a hound guarding her home.

1) Ragnar was impressed with Lagertha’s courage and that’s why he courted her. Ragnar defeated a hound and a bear guarding Lagertha’s home, he choked out the hound and speared the bear.
2) He had to kill a giant serpent to win Thora’s hand in marriage which he did by spearing it in the heart than cutting off its head
3) Ragnar gave Aslaug some impossible tasks such as arrive dressed but undressed, hungry but not hungry. When she met all of his requirements he was very impressed by her wit and took her as his wife

He was said to be of royal heritage in many different versions of the stories of Ragnar. King Ælla kills him later on by throwing him into a pit of snakes. His 5 sons were documented historical figures however his own documentation is not enough to know if he was really a real person or not.

Lagertha was regarded in sagas and ballads as the daughter of Sigurd and Brynhild, the famous hero and Valkyrie of ancient Norse mythology.

2) Ragnar was said to have battled Charlemagne himself and won.
3) Legend debates the existence of his sons; some claim that Bjorn never existed, or that Ragnar only had three sons.

An invasion was organised by the sons of Ragnar beacuse Ælla had executed Ragnar in 865 by throwing him in a snake pit. Ælla was captured alive, but was executed by Halfdan and his brothers using the blood eagle method. His ribcage was opened from behind and his lungs were pulled out, forming a wing-like shape.

Ragnar was a strong individual that started out different from other warriors. Not that he wasnt liked, it was just alittle odd for a famer to become such an important person in their society.
